St Martin’s Day (Martinstag or Laternenumzug) is a German tradition, celebrating the feast of St Martin on 11th November. Children walk through their hometown carrying lanterns, singing songs about Sankt Martin and enjoying sweets and buns or bread figures (Weckmänner) especially baked for this occasion. We usually celebrate at the school with a sale of homemade Weckmänner and hot dogs, followed by a lantern procession, St Martin's songs and a performance of the story of St Martin.
But this year's St Martin's celebrations are moving online! Just because we can't meet together, doesn't mean we can't celebrate in other ways - here's how to get involved: |
PLEASE MAKE A DONATION!
We're aiming to raise £1000 for the Primary Library. This is what we donated last year and with your help we can give the same again. Our normal St Martin's Day is not only fun for everyone, it is also a great fundraiser for the PTA. Remember that all of the money we raise goes back to the school: this year, more than ever, we need the continued support of the parents. Think about how much you would usually spend at the St Martin's Event and consider making an equivalent donation if you can. |
Enter the Best Lantern Design Competition

All children in years R to 2 will make lanterns at school; children in years 3 to 6 are also welcome to do their own designs at home. The school-made lanterns should come home by Friday 23rd October - you can then enter them into the lantern competition!
|
Enter the Most Delicious Looking Weckmann Competition
|
How delicious looking are your Weckmänner? Make some at home, just like you normally would for St Martin's Day, and then enter your most tasty looking Weckmann into our competition (children do need to be involved in the making process!) Eat and enjoy them at home ... mmmmmmm.

Enter the Best St Martin's Performance Competition
|
We have some amazing singers and performers at the school and we want to see your interpretations of the St Martin's songs, or the St Martin's story. Entries can be solos or groups and these can be created and filmed at home or at school.
NOTE ON SUBMITTING MOVIES You have three options for submitting your movie - you must indicate on the form which method you will use - submissions will not be accepted without a completed form:
