St Martin’s Day (Martinstag or Laternenumzug) is a German tradition, celebrating the feast of St Martin on 11th November. Children walk through their hometown carrying lanterns, singing songs about Sankt Martin and enjoying sweets and buns or bread figures (Weckmänner) especially baked for this occasion. We usually celebrate at the school with a sale of homemade Weckmänner and hot dogs, followed by a lantern procession, St Martin's songs and a performance of the story of St Martin.

But this year's St Martin's celebrations are moving online!

Just because we can't meet together, doesn't mean we can't celebrate in other ways - here's how to get involved:
PLEASE MAKE A DONATION!
We're aiming to raise £1000 for the Primary Library. This is what we donated last year and with your help we can give the same again.
DONATE NOW
Our normal St Martin's Day is not only fun for everyone, it is also a great fundraiser for the PTA. Remember that all of the money we raise goes back to the school: this year, more than ever, we need the continued support of the parents. Think about how much you would usually spend at the St Martin's Event and consider making an equivalent donation if you can.
Photo/movie consent
If your child appears in any of the photos or movies submitted, we will need your consent to publish this: please indicate that consent is given on the entry form. We would also like to share images and movies with the Goethe-Institut; they have their own form which needs to be downloaded, printed, signed and returned. If you are willing to share in this way, please complete their separate permission form. This should be returned directly to Fr Havenstein (d.havenstein@europaschool.uk).

Enter the Best Lantern Design Competition
STORY
The plan was that children in years R to 2 would make lanterns in school before half term; however, for those who are self-isolating that won't be possible - but that doesn't mean you can't still enter the competition! If your child makes a lantern at school, great! You can use that one (if you want) - it should come home by Friday 23rd October. For all those children who aren't at school, or who are in years 3 to 6, you can get creative with your own design - just Google make a St Martin's lantern for some ideas! Once you're done:
  • Take a photo of the completed lantern
  • From Friday 23rd October, submit your entry using this form (closing date for entries is Wednesday 4th November - extended from Sunday 1st November - this applies to ALL year groups and classes, including those who are self isolating). If the photo includes your child's face please complete the PASCH Goethe-Institut release form in addition.
  • Remember to make a donation!
  • PTA committee members will shortlist the (anonymised) entries
  • The (anonymised) shortlisted entries will be published on this website from Wednesday 11th November and everyone will be able to vote on their favourite
  • Voting will close on Sunday 15th November - winners will be announced the following week
